On the same day, the Constitution of India was enacted by removing the Government of India Act (1935) in 1950. The Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949 to establish an independent republic and establish the rule of law in the country and on 26 January 1950 it was implemented with a democratic government system.

It was chosen on 26th January because in 1930 the Indian National Congress (IEC) had declared India as a full swaraj. It is one of the three national holidays in India, the other two are Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti.
